Hey, hi there.
Nikola Tamindzic here – the photographer behind the Home of the Vain, in case we were never properly introduced.
This is where you'll find my latest work, drawn from personal projects and professional assignments. This site is a work notebook, a playground, and a lab: I shoot portraits and fashion, sex and landscapes, celebrities and friends, and I won't be limiting myself to any one of those here.
So, this is not a diary, although it will be updated daily. And this is not a portfolio; for that, visit nikola-tamindzic.com.
Hope you enjoy surprises – love, Nikola.
About the Home of the Vain
By Jia Jia Fei, August 2009
There is something strangely familiar in a photograph by Nikola Tamindzic; a self-reflective portrait of an unapologetic vanity simultaneously saved by the very empathy for pure, unadulterated humanity it portrays.
Looking closer, the work itself is a deliberate paradox – darkness and humor, desire and restraint – portraying of a world beyond our gaze that is recognizable, yet entirely dictated by its own rules and realities. The story furthermore, does not begin or end within photograph, but seems to continue on own without you.
What is it about a photograph that provokes the indulgent activity of looking? A need to descend deeper into the surreal, fictitious world of the photographer who created it?
This is why you're here. This is the Home of the Vain.
About Nikola Tamindzic
Nikola Tamindzic
Acclaimed New York portrait and fashion photographer, Nikola Tamindzic established his reputation as Gawker's house photographer in 2004. In 2008 the next generation of his work appeared on the notable Home of the Vain, a site composed of daily curated portrait and fashion photography from professional and personal projects.
Possessing an uncanny ability to disarm both subjects and viewers alike with his alluringly powerful portraits, he seeks to capture the beautiful contradictions of human experience. In the vein of predecessors who have sought to capture the uncanny in the extreme – Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, and Terry Richardson – Nikola's distinctively surreal photographs portray a world that is beyond our gaze.
Nikola's work has been written about in The New York Times, PHOTO, The British Journal of Photography, and other high profile publications.
His first book of portraits is scheduled for release in 2010.
